The ongoing third test of India Vs Sri Lanka will pretty much be remembered for its controversy. This blog is about this controversy and my thoughts on this issue.
The Sri Lankan players made history when they came out wearing masks for the third test .But why not the pollution level recorded in the national capital was 351, which is much more than the safety standards.I am astonished how BCCI even thought of conducting a test match in such conditions. As a result the Sri Lankan players faced a lot of problem while bowling and fielding. Time and again players went back and came in.Till this point we had already lost our reputation in the rest of countries. What happened next was extremely painful for me as an Indian. Virat Kohli was infuriated and declared his innings. I won't say declaring the innings was wrong but the way Virat reacted was very shameful.I would like to question him whether this is the way one should treat their guests. Is it the mistake of Sri Lankan players that they are not used to staying in such high pollution levels? Experts have asked general public to avoid coming out in such bad weather. We should thank Sri Lankan players that they came out to play. Had they refused or protested for such playing conditions, the BCCI would have been in trouble.
The media even bashed the Lankan players for such behaviour. Most of them site the example of 1996 when Indians showed their generosity by going to tour Sri Lanka. To those media persons I want to make them remember that in 2014 when West Indies left tour in between, it was Sri Lanka who played against India and saved Crores of money for BCCI. The tiredness and unpreparedness was clearly visible on the Sri Lankan players on that tour.
Finally I believe that it would have been better if Kohli and Indian media would have treated the Sri Lankan players with respect. In a weather which has been quoted to be dangerous by experts, Sri Lankans are playing. I am sure if India would have been losing the situation must have been different. The NGT has already scolded BCCI for holding a test match in such bad weather. What is gone is gone, I would be happy if Indians apologise for their mistake after the Test gets over.
