The national game of India has been out of color for past few years.The big question is can hockey (Indian mens hockey)bring back its golden days in India.
Hockey is a game in which India has dominated in the past. In fact India holds the record of maximum number of gold medals in the game of hockey.The days of Dhyan Chand were absolutely golden for India as India has no match at that time.India has won a staggering 11 olympic medals including 8 gold,1silver and 2 bronze medals.But after 1980 things have not been good for Indian hockey and after 2000 India has been facing problems in even qualifying for the Olympics.
The major reason for this drop is the change of rules.Hockey earlier was played on plain grounds.But after the introduction of Astro Turf grounds,the game becoming fast,Dominance of European countries in the administration made things worse for India.Not only did Indian hockey lost tournaments but it also lost its popularity from India.Another big reason for this failure is that we have not been able to use our legends well.We have been regularly employing foreign coaches,staff and leaving behind our own hockey stars.This really backfired Indian hockey and we have been constantly appointing new coaches who have not been able to coordinate with Indian players.If the condition of men's hockey is bad then the condition of women's hockey is worse.But that is for some other reason,it is because they have not been looked after well.All the negatives have hit Indian hockey very badly.
But things started to change in after the Hockey Indian League.This league helped Indian players to learn from the foreign players and even win over their home countries.Players like Ashley Jackson have helped a lot in building new young players.Last year was good for Indian players.They finished second in champions trophy ,loosing out a narrow final against Australia.Though did not perform well in Olympics.Indian team has been performing consistently well against the top teams in various series.The new four quarter rule has worked really well for India as they used to concede last minute goals in important matches.
Finally a ray of light has surely started to come for the Indian Men's hockey team.They have a big chance of proving this in next year's World Championships to be held in Bhubaneswar.The only thing that the team needs to learn is performing well in big tournaments.I think that good days of this celebrated game is about to come for India.
