U.S Open has started and it is worth discusing the most unpredictable event in all grandslams i.e the women's singles.
The most unpredictable event in any Grand Slam event since many years has been Women's Singles event. In fact No.1 and No.2 seeds have never played finals among them in Women's Singles. Each and every year there has has been an unknown champion in Women's singles event. There have been times when players like Venus Willams seeded 23 went on to win the Wimbledon in 2007.The very unpredictable nature of this event makes it exciting and gives new faces a chance to gain recognition in World arena. The interesting thing to note is that Women's Singles is highly unpredictable and to its contrary Men's singles is dominated by the Big four(Federer,Nadal,Djokovic,Murray).
Another interesting fact in Women's tennis is the big gap in number of Grandslam victories.Among the current players Serena Willams has 23 grand slams following her is Venus Willams who has 7 Grand Slams to her name,i.e the difference of 16 grand slams. This also indicates the highly unpredictable nature of this event.Maria Sharapova ,who won her first Grand Slam in 2004, only managed to win five grandslams which means five grandslam in 14 years. The main reason for such statics is the inconsistent performance of Women's players in Grandslam events. They constantly get injured in every one or two years.Even Serena Willams had to wait for such grandslam victory. After 1999 she had to wait for 3 years i.e 2002 to win a grand slam.In fact she won 3 grandslams in 2002.
Another good thing about women's tennis is that after singles the women change over to doubles event.Martina Hingis did the same and has been winning doubles events in recent years. This is good as legends of the game always bring life to the events.
Finally I believe that the unpredictabilty in the women's event helps the event to become popular and also help new players to come up.Interestingly this year also 19 seeded players are already out of the women's singles event.I won't be surprised if we see an unpopular face lift the U.S Open trophy this year.
