Shooting has been a very successful sport in India. This blog is about the laurels and the shortcomings of this sport.
Shooting has been among the most successful games for India at the Olympics.India has managed to win 4 Olympic medals which includes 1 bronze,2 silver and 1 gold.Abhinav Bindra is the first and only Indian athlete to win an individual gold which was in Shooting only.India has done quiet well in the World Championships also.Recently Jitu Rai set a world record in the 50m pistol event. He scored an astounding 240.1 to set the new record and also take the gold medal at the World Championships.Interestingly the silver was also bagged by India by Amanpreet Singh. The shooters have been pretty consistent in the big events like Olympics and World Championships. The heroics of the 2010 Commonwealth Games is also unforgettable.Indian shooters managed to win 30 medals which included 13 gold,11 silver and 5 bronze medals.
But there are some shortcomings also. The biggest drawback is the failure in capitalising the young talent in shooting. In the ISSF Junior World Championships India finished second just after China. But when these young shooters reach the senior level, the performance drops down badly.Just think about this for a while,India just manages to win 1 medal in 1 event out of 15 events(which did not even happen in Rio Olympics) in a game where its junior players finish second in the World Championships Something goes seriously wrong when juniors reach the senior level.Secondly shooting is not played in most of the districts in our our country due to the lack of shooting arenas. In fact this considered a game of bigger cities. It is only because of the healthy shooting culture in the Army that we get some good shooters.Hence there is a need to setup more shoting arenas in the country.
Finally I would say that shooting is the game which can help India to move ahead of other countries. In Olympics Athletics,Swimming,Shooting and Wrestling have maximum medals, bringing medals in Athletics and swimming seem far away.Hence shooting is the game India should target in the next Olympics.
