Biopics on Sportspersons:Does it help sports?

The current trend in bollywood is to make biopic on sports persons. But does this do any good to the sport. This blog is about this very argument.
In last few years there have been as many as seven biopics on sports persons namely

  • Dangal

  • Paan Singh Tomar

  • Bhag Milkha Bhaag

  • Sachin :A Billon Dreams

  • MS Dhoni:The Untold Story
  • Mary Com
  • Azhar

These movies give an insight to the life of these sports persons. The movies are quiet motivating and all of them are major hits in terms of collections except Azhar. In fact Dangal is the highest grossing bollywood movie ever. The stars in this movie have done an exceptional job in playing the character.
These movies surely have an impact on the society. After Dangal there were many Akhadas which started admitting girls.Wrestling has found a new place in the hearts of people. The message of women empowerment was successfully conveyed to the people.
Paan Singh Tomar was also a brave effort in making an unsung hero popular. That movie was a real mirror of the condition of sports in the country
Mary Com and Bhaag Milkha Bhaag were also great movies in terms of telling the hardwork that sportsperson do.Bhaag Milkha Bhaag was a very important movie in terms of conveying the message that a person can reach his goals irrespective of the cirumstances one is living.
But since last few years this has become more like a money minting tactic rather than helping out the sport.MS Dhoni was a movie which was a feature film and was like any other bollywood love story. The essence of Dhoni's hardwork or his journey was lost in the love story shown in the movie. It was like projecting Dhoni as a legend and his grief of loosing his beloved.I think Dhoni had a wonderful chance of showing the corruption, politics that is involved in the selection process. He has certainly reached a point where he can do so.Similarly Azhar was also a feature movie where so much time has been spent in showing Azhar's love life and defending his match fixing allegations. One may argue that to make a movie there has to be some entertainment value in the movie.I completely agree with this point, but one must remember that there is a difference between a biopic and a mainstream feature film.By doing this the sportspersons are just running away from their responsibility of telling people the truth about the condition of sports. When we watch a movie,it becomes quiet clear whether it is to show the hardships faced by the athlete or minting money and glorification of the athlete.
The athletes should make their biopics with some responsibility, they can't expect this from the film makers as they believe in making more and more profits only.
An example would probably make you understand my point.Milkha Singh sold the rights of  the movie just for Rs 1 and demanded 50% of the profit to be donated to his charitable trustHence if a movie is made on a sportspersons then either it should reflect the true story of the athlete, the system he had to face, the politics he faced or it should be a documentary type of movie like Sachin:A billon Dreams.A biopic should not be a masala bollywood movie,it does not suit the sports stars.
Finally I believe that the capacity of a bollywood movie should be used to its fullest,it should be a movie that gives a good message to the society. At the same time entertainment elements should also be added to the movie.I am sure the mid level path can be followed as some of the past few biopics have managed to do so.Also by very nature the life of a sportspeson is inspiring and the makers do not have to spend their much type in the story part..Also there should be movies on the unsung heroes of sports.I say this because I believe that the power of movies is enormous and it can easily motivate peopl to take up and respect sportspersons .I am glad that some film makers have announced some movies on them also.

Ashes 2017:The clash of the Titans

The most awaited test series of the year,Ashes is back with Australia and England battling one more time. This blog about the team analysis of both the teams and who stands a better chance this time. This year's Ashes series is a very different contest all together. Both the teams have a bunch of new players and debutants. This makes the series even more interesting.Talking about the visitors i.e England, the whole batting line up revolves aroung two players Alaister Cook and Joe Root. The whole team is a lot more dependant on these two players. The top order of England having the likes of  Mark Stoneman,David Malan,James Vince is difficult to predict as these players don't have much experience. But the strength lies in the lower middle order of England where there is Moeen Ali,Jonny Bairstow. Both these players have a decent average of 35+.But it would be intersting to see how Moeen Ali plays in the fast and bouncy pitches of Australia. He got exposed to short balls when England ...

Who is better Sachin or Virat?

The hot Question since past three years is Who is a better player Sachin or Virat?                              Sachin Tendulkar                                                        Virat Kohli Well its not easy to compare two people of two different generations but it still can be done because of the fact that both of them have played with each other for good 3-4 years. Lets compare both of them on different aspects-: 1.       Time periods :  When we compare the periods when these two played then they are extremely different. Sachin made his debut at a time when India was emerging as a cricketing country, when we were not the best in any of the things. Sachin came as a hope as to we could say that we hav...

How has Indian badminton managed to reach great heights?

This phase of badminton is the best phase ever in Indian badminton. This blog is about what badminton has done right to reach this stage. Last two years have been exceptional for the Indian badminton players. From a hint of glory in men's singles to the dominance in women's singles, badminton has grown a lot as a sport.P.V Sindhu,K.Srikant are among the best known faces today in India. From Olympic silver to back to back superseries titles, hints of dominance of Indian badminton can be sensed. But when did the fate of Indian badminton change? Badminton has a great connection with India. It is believed that badminton started in this very country. In the 1980's the world saw a great badminton player Prakash Padukone. One of the very few known sportspersons at that time. The All England champion had set a tone for other coming badminton players at the time when sports(that too badminton) was hardly considered a profession to be taken. After that in 10 years there were a few good ...
